Erica Maria Cheung

Community Engagement Coordinator

Erica is the Community Engagement Coordinator at Capacity for Health, a program of the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum. In her role, she coordinates marketing, communications, and content curation while also implementing recruitment strategies for C4H’s National Learning Community for HIV/CBO Leadership. A feminist writer and educator, she has always emphasized social justice in her extensive professional experience in journalism, social media, and non-profit communications. She was formerly based in New York City where she worked for local and national organizations, which included media outlets such as the Huffington Post and the US Daily Mail. While in Southern California, she had the opportunity to work as a video production consultant and writer for Planned Parenthood for Orange and San Bernardino Counties.

Erica is currently completing her Ph.D. in Culture & Theory at the University of California, Irvine. She is an interdisciplinary feminist scholar with emphases in Asian American Studies, Gender & Sexuality Studies, and Visual Studies. She has worked as a lecturer and graduate instructor as well as a researcher and communications consultant for the School of Humanities. In her research, she studies the cultural economy of food in the United States and its relationship to the gendered and racialized production of Asian American identity, popular culture, and community. Erica is a mixed race, 1.5 generation immigrant from Hong Kong who grew up in the borderlands of El Paso, TX and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. She is a proud Asian-Latina American woman who has dedicated her life to social justice education and creative storytelling. In her spare time, she enjoys roller skating and watching British television shows.
